What Yard Work Should Be Done in the Fall?

Fall and spring are the most laborious seasons in the landscaping world. In spring, it’s all about getting plants ready for the growing season. In autumn, the focus turns to cleanup and winter prep. Read on to learn what yard work should be done in the fall.

Raking and Leaf Cleanup

Perhaps the most common fall landscaping task is leaf cleanup. This may be a weekly chore, depending on how many trees you have around your property. Pests and critters love leaf piles because they are warm, moist, and protective in rainstorms. Don’t leave leaves unattended for too long, or you may end up with a bigger problem on your hand.

Tree and Plant Pruning

Some plants, shrubs and trees do best with fall pruning. At minimum, you should trim off weak branches that could become safety hazards in the winter. If you have a yard maintenance plan with Berns Landscaping, we can evaluate the right pruning season for the plant life on your property. Our goal is always to promote healthy growth so your plants stay strong all year long.

Gutter Cleaning

If you haven’t cleaned your gutters all year, you may need to clean them once at the start of fall and once at the end. If you cleaned your gutters in the spring, you may be able to wait until mid/late fall. Once again, it will depend on the trees on your property. A home surrounded by trees may need more frequent gutter cleaning than a home with no trees at all.

Mulch around Trees and Flower Beds

Protect plant roots by topping off your mulch beds in the fall. This will provide a barrier between the roots and winter frost. It also provides continual nutrients to the plants as the mulch breaks down in the off-season. This is a good time to pull any remaining weeds in the flower beds to make spring cleanup a breeze.

The Final Lawn Mowing of the Year

Early autumn usually marks the last lawn mow of the year. The exact time of year will depend on the weather and the type of grass on your lawn. Once you’re finished mowing, clean and secure all yard tools safely in the shed for winter. Of course, if you have a landscaping company that handles your fall yard work, this won’t be an issue for you.

Autumn Color Swap

Don’t limit your flower bed to spring colors. There are plenty of fall annuals that can liven up your landscaping in the cooler months. At Berns Landscaping, we provide seasonal color swaps as part of our year-long landscaping services. We want your property to loon amazing every single month, including pops of beautiful color and crisp, clean bed edges. Beautiful landscaping doesn’t have to end in the fall and winter. We’ll keep your property looking its best.
